We invite you to explore and learn more about Messiah Lutheran Church on this website. Even better, come visit us in person! We would enjoy the chance to get to know you.
We are a Christian church in Forest Lake, MN (just northeast of the high school on Hwy 97). As a liturgical Lutheran church, we offer a traditional worship service in a casual setting. As our guest, come and listen to teaching, enjoy music from our choir, or sip a cup of coffee during our Sunday Bible study.
We believe it's important for people of all ages to hear God's word. Families with young children can feel free to join us during worship services. We don't mind if your baby needs to cry! We also offer a safe, private mother's room with a comfy chair, toys and books, and space for kids to play.
We believe what the scriptures teach about God. That He is a Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; three distinct persons, but of the same divine essence; all of whom are equal in power, equal in eternity, and equal in majesty. The Triune God created everything that exists by the power of His word. He is Lord over His creation and judges with perfect righteousness and justice. He is also loving and long-suffering in His graciousness, wanting all people to turn away from their sins and receive the forgiveness He offers in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ His Son.
God created mankind (man and woman) in His own image. Before sin came into the world, the first people (Adam and Eve) walked with God in perfect fellowship. Being tempted, they disobeyed God and sin overwhelmed the world, corrupting God's creation and mankind's very nature. As a result of their sin, all people from then on were born with a sinful nature and opposed to God. As a result, scripture teaches that no one is good. No amount of good works can bring about a person's salvation. Without God's intervention, we are all destined for eternal judgement.
In our sinfulness, we have no way to save ourselves. Scripture tells us that our sin demands justice, and that this justice takes the form of eternal damnation and separation from God in hell. So God executed His perfect plan to redeem us by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for us. On the cross, Jesus cried out, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do," demonstrating God's desire to extend forgiveness to all humanity. Jesus' death and resurrection three days later satisfied the payment needed on our behalf for our sins. With that in mind, the scriptures also teach that we are saved by God's grace through faith in what Jesus did for us on the cross.
The Holy Scriptures as found in the Bible are different than any other book in the world in that they are the Word of God. God called a select group of men to pen those things that the Holy Spirit revealed to them. Because of this, we believe the Bible to be truly inspired by God. It is innerant and infallible, without error or contradiction. Because it reveals what God has chosen to communicate to us about Himself, what we know about God comes only from the Bible and no other source. It teaches us God's perfect standard and His law to us, the Ten Commandments. And as such, it convicts us of our sins, commands us to repent and trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of those sins, and equips us as Christians for the good works which God has called us to do.
We believe there is only one true Christian Church, made up of all people who have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. This is what is known as the Church Universal, and includes every believer in Christ who ever existed or will exist.
We also believe in the importance of congregations (or the Church Local) who are smaller, local congregations of Christians united by the same mission that Jesus gave us to fulfill -- to make disciples of all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; and teaching all that Christ has commanded to teach in the Holy Scriptures.
The local church is the family of believers and the place where we experience God's grace through hearing the word, receiving the sacraments, and celebrating the forgiveness of our sins.
A creed is a statement of belief. There are three major creeds introduced to the Church at key times in history. They were intended to strike down heresies and false teachings, while also providing clarification on what the Scriptures teach about God, creation, humanity, and the Church.
The three major creeds are:
